Did Anyone Feel That?

Whoa... The room shook. There was an earthquake a second ago. A search of the USGS.ORG site resulted in this:

A minor earthquake occurred at 4:38:36 AM (PST) on Tuesday, November 26, 2002. The magnitude 3.7 event occurred 3 km (2 miles) SE of San Ramon, CA. The hypocentral depth is 11 km ( 7 miles).

When the room moves, it's nice to have a place to turn to make sure you're not crazy. It's strange though - in the last few days, there's been a series of small tremors. Kind of unnerving, especially with this earthquake weather that's here; the howling, warm, dry winds coming out of the valley.

San Francisco Politics

I got a kick out of this photo that was taken at the Haight fair about a week ago, so I wanted to put it up here.

In SF politics you're not liberal unless you're really, really liberal. Well, Tom Ammiano is really, really, really, liberal. I think we call it progressive populism here and across the bay. I like that about politics in this area. It's never about "should we help homeless" or "should we give equal rights to gays", it's always "what type of help" and "damn right", respectively. There's got to be something counter-balancing the conservative revival in D.C., right?

First Comment on Recall

Staying up past my bed time watching the Walnut Creek debate between the Cali recall candidates. Here's my take.

I wish we could elect two people. One to run social policies and another to run economic policies. I'd vote for Camejo for the social chair and Uberoth for the economic chair. I think that's where most californians are -- and yes, they're pretty schizophretic.

And whoo hoo! Camejo's talking about proportional representation!

Unfortunately I don't think Camejo's ready to work with Uberoth, they would fight it out over most issues such as schools, overtime pay, welfare systems, etc. But better policies would probably result if they had to meet half way. Uberoth for freedom! Camejo for equity!

I'd rather use McClintock as a door mat.

Bustamante is too much of a puppet. (Though the name CRUZ is kinda of cool)

Huffington is Feinstein with an accent.

If I weren't so disgusted with the recall in the first place maybe I'd be happy voting for one of these characters.

Oh, I forgot about Schwarzenegger. But that's not really by accident since there's really not much to talk about. What's he for? He's like that big blow up balloon at the auto dealer. It's big and everyone sees it, but it doesn't make any sense.

"Ah, that's a big blow up dinosaur sir..." (followed by long awkward silence)

"Yeah, you like it?"

"Why's it here again?"

"For getting attention."

"But why?"

Can I get by Mr. Bull Elk?

We met a guy before our hike into the Redwood National Park that told us of a bull elk that nearly charged him, as they are inclined to do during their fall mating season. In the afternoon of our second day in the park, when we got back to our tent, we saw a monster bearing the likeness of such said elk.

Lisa and I yelped, waved branches, and made a grassblade whistle to scare them with our human presence, but they reacted with perfect nonchalance. I even made my best lion sounds, but they were probably not hip to the savanna tunes I was broadcasting them. We tied a blue fleece to the top of a fishing pole and waved it like it was a resident of pluto, but these malicious looking kings of the forest just kept masticating. The large blackberry bush behind our tent, the blackberry-laden bear poop found nearby, combined with our resident sexually-charged elks made us sleep uneasy that night. Needless to say, we did make a large fire that night (after drying off the only lighter we brought, which caused some additional anxiety).
