Origins of Evolving Type

Evolving Type is an idea that took shape in a 3 hr car ride from Berkeley to Tahoe. The idea is to make a site that'll give us a chance to talk about our thoughts and the occasional out-of-left-field idea. Hosting our own site and doing weblogs seemed like the way to go since it gives us the flexibility to administer our own site and allows each of us to customize our pages to our own tastes. Having never done this before, it's been a fun challenge for an un-tech-savy guy like me to get this site up and running. During the process, it made me wish I had taken some computer science classes while at Berkeley...

Moveable Type and the GUI for the server we're running on certainly made things a little easier. Thanks go out to AO for generating the enthusiasm, Kelly for her help in getting started, and Robin for the "yeah, you should do that" attitude. Subconsciously, I was probably led to start the weblog by all the blog entries of Brad DeLong, Chair of the PEIS department at UC Berkeley and a great economist.

Okay, more to come...

Blogging News

Here's the 2002 winner of The Guardian's (the UK Guardian not the SF one) "Best British Blog".

Scaryduck: Not scary. Not a duck. It's a great read.

Also, Movable Type introduced version 2.5 on Oct 8th. We'll probably make the upgrade soon on this site -- as soon as I figure out what that entails...

Movable Type 2.5

I've added the new thumbnail capability that comes with Movable Type 2.5 and had icdsoft, our web host company, add the Image::Magick module that's required to make it work. It's seemless. Here's an example:

Changes

I felt the need to change the look of my page. It was getting too depressing with all the black and Blue -- it psychologically beats you up, ya know? Anyway, I need to brush up on my web skills in preparation for the HUD workshop that's coming up in mid-December. Finally got approval and funding for our first workshop! Woo-hoo!

Marc, I'm still thinking about the newspaper-esque frontpage for evolving type, but I'm not ready to start on that just yet...

...well, I'm pretty happy with the results. It's weird, you never know what color combination you'll end up with once you start redoing a website. So here's to Silver, SlateGray, Goldenrod, Khaki, LightSteelBlue, and FireBrick. Com'on, how can you not use "FireBrick"?

Nite.

regarding:Adaptation

Came upon this via movabletype.org. It seems that a sequel to Being John Malkovich is coming out and there's a weblog about it. Have you seen it? It's great and this is the type of movie that could use a follow-up. I loved the first thing I read from the weblog:

regarding: Adaptation weblog - about a movie by Spike Jonze based on The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean

Nov 26 02. The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and how it relates to reporting:

The NY Daily News has an interview with Susan, who seems to be getting the lion's share of the press accompanying the movie (which is understandable because she has a fairly unique role in it all). In yet another of the many parallels between the movie and the book, Susan says:
"The notion that objectivity exists is, in and of itself, a flimsy construct. The kind of reporting I do is affected by the fact that it's being reported. And you do develop a connection with people that you write about."

How could Kaufman not write himself into the movie?

Being Doogie Howser

Doogie Howser M.D. sat at his blue screen and typed up the lesson of each sitcom episode. I'm kind of doing the same here at evolving type. Except, it's usually not a lesson or moral. I don't get that personal, and other people can read this (if they want to). I think I'm a bit ahead of Doogie though. He had a blue screen, I have the internet. He had a pager, I've got SprintPCS.

But he's an M.D., and I'm still trying to leave school behind.

Well, at least I have evolving type. Doogie would probably have a weblog if he were still around.

Bubble Bliss

While in Seattle, I did one thing I would count as 'productive'. I had the great fortune of participating in setting up the weblog for Bubble Bliss, a youth run and driven bubble tea and espresso business in the White Center community, Seattle, Washington. I don't think they will challenge Starbucks any time soon, but I think the venture will be successful in its own way.

The Boys and Girls Club, where they operate out of on most days, is a great space, with an indoor basketball court, a computer lab, and lots of youths running around. I met a few of them last Friday and they fixed me up with a watermelon bubble tea. I wanted to stay longer and play some ball, but I didn't wanted to play against anyone I couldn't beat. That basically ruled out everyone above fifth grade.

Proximity is kind of a vague concept in cyberspace, but if you want to know my physical neighbors in the Blog World, then click on this link.

Audio Blogging

Hey, this might be fun... AudBlog will let you post audio to your weblog by calling them on your phone. I'm going to have to upgrade our Movable Type to version 2.6 or better and give this thing a try! Might be another thing I can promote in our bid to do some work with local education and youth groups.

audblog : sounding out

audblog is a service that provides bloggers with the ability to post audio to their blogs from any phone. At the end of the trial sign up we will provide you with the telephone number...all you have to do is call the number and the world hears you. Use it to make a difference...Use it to make your voice be heard.

update:: Hmm... it looks like this service costs money; money that I don't have. Oh, well... maybe next time.

Beck's Log

Beck's got a weblog going. :: beck :: journal ::

Can't wait to see him at the Greek Theater, but $48 a ticket is borderline unaffordable. And you know there's no skimping on whiskey on the nights leading up to the concert either with Mr. Sean Simpson coming to town. All right then.

Autoblog Ipod Nano blogging bloggy blog SHAM!

Wow, I think Autoblog is mighty brave to basically admit that the contest was a sham. Uh...no winners announced? Problems during the last hours? What problems? A search of old posts about the contest shows that.. wait .. they've been wiped clean. You can't comment on the site about the contest and they're keeping quiet. I'm calling the lawyers on this one... Autoblog is affliated with weblog inc and weblog inc is funded my some big shots (I think AOL being among them).

Guess it's time to visit Jalopnik and Edmunds for my automotive news.

update: the post explaining their problems with the contest is also gone.
